Android Digital Wellbeing or unScroll: choose by the task
Start with the phone’s built-in tools if you need a daily app timer or a temporary pause. Android documents these in Digital Wellbeing on supported phones. Consider unScroll when useful Instagram or YouTube functions need to remain accessible while selected browser feeds are hidden. These are different mechanisms, not a universal winner and loser.
Separate the requirements
A daily allowance treats all time in an app as part of the same budget. A pause makes the app unavailable for a session. A section filter distinguishes the places you can visit while the useful service remains available.
If your task is a client reply, an app timer may eventually interrupt it. If you do not need the service at all right now, filtering individual sections may be unnecessarily complicated. Choose the requirement before the product.
Try a simple comparison
- Check the built-in controls present on your own phone; names and availability can vary.
- Write one task that must remain possible and one route you want closed.
- Try a timer or pause if the whole app fits the intended boundary.
- Try selective unScroll browser filtering if some Instagram or YouTube sections must remain useful.
- Record whether the needed action still works and whether another route escapes the chosen boundary.
Current gaps matter
unScroll’s Focus, schedules and browsing limits apply inside unScroll. Its original-app protection is separate; the current version does not implement a combined time budget across chosen installed apps. Native recognition also has unresolved device checks and the known Instagram Home curtain issue.
Using both tools does not automatically close every route or synchronize budgets. Review each device and browser separately. Keep the combination only if it fits your actual tasks and current supported behavior.
