App timers, app blockers or feed filters: which do you need?
Use a timer for a daily quantity, an app pause for a period of unavailability, and a feed filter when useful and distracting functions share one app. None is the best choice for every task. Start with the boundary you need, then choose the mechanism.
Three boundaries, three tradeoffs
A timer answers “how much today?” It counts time without distinguishing a useful conversation from a feed. Android documents app timers in Digital Wellbeing on supported phones. A pause answers “available now?” and is useful when you want the entire app out of reach for a session.
A filter answers “which sections?” It can preserve a conversation or a video search while hiding a feed. It does not necessarily reduce the total time spent, and it depends on recognizing the service’s interface. Choose based on the unwanted behavior rather than the strictest-sounding label.
Use a concrete example
If you need to answer clients in Instagram throughout the day, a daily cap may interrupt work. A messages-first setup is worth testing. If every part of an app can wait until lunch, a pause may be simpler. If you want a fixed entertainment allowance, a timer matches that goal more directly.
A combination can make sense, but check all routes. A limit on an original app does not automatically cover the same service opened in a separate browser. Conversely, a browser filter does not automatically apply to the original app.
What unScroll currently covers
unScroll offers Instagram and YouTube browser filters, plus Focus and limits for browsing inside unScroll. In version 0.5.0, My plan adds temporary pauses, schedules and daily budgets for selected Android apps, including Instagram and YouTube inside unScroll. Multiple apps in one daily rule share its budget; separate rules create separate budgets.
Original-app blocking needs Android accessibility permission; daily budgets also need Usage access. Time tracking, shared budgets and the revised Instagram curtain recovery still await phone acceptance. After a reboot or the protection grant expires, open unScroll to refresh protection. Choose a tool on its documented scope and validation, not a promise of saved time.
