How to keep your phone useful while reading without switching to feeds

Reviewed:

Choose the phone functions that support reading, such as a dictionary, notes or one reference lookup. Keep the book or reading position ready to return to. If a necessary Instagram or YouTube reference turns into feed browsing, selected unScroll browser restrictions may help; they do not restrict every reading or dictionary app.

Decide what the phone is for

You may want to read without the phone, or you may need it for a resource. The useful choice is specific: “look up this term” is easier to finish than a general visit to several apps.

Before a lookup, mark the sentence or page you want to return to. If an interesting new topic appears, save its name for later instead of turning the current reading session into unrelated research.

Use a lookup-and-return loop

  1. Choose a reading section or passage.
  2. When a term or reference is needed, write the exact question.
  3. Open the resource, obtain the answer and make a short note if useful.
  4. Return to the marked passage before choosing another activity.
  5. If a social feed repeatedly becomes the detour, restrict that section where supported and test the same loop again.

Match the tool to the detour

A direct dictionary resource or notification setting may be enough when the distraction is outside Instagram and YouTube. unScroll’s relevant role is selective browsing in those services, not general reading supervision.

A smaller screen-time number is not evidence of better understanding. A more useful check is whether you returned to the passage and completed the reading task you chose.
