How to keep Instagram messages without browsing the feed
A messages-first setup keeps communication as the purpose of opening Instagram. unScroll has a DMs Only preset for Instagram inside its browser. It is a restriction preset, not a separate messaging service, and it does not promise that every shared video will remain playable.
Define what counts as a useful session
A simple rule is: open Instagram to answer a named conversation, then leave after replying. If you also need profiles or saved posts for work, choose a custom combination rather than a preset that is too narrow.
Removing the feed is useful only if the remaining workflow works for you. Do not assume that fewer visible sections automatically means that every communication task is supported.
Test the workflow you actually use
- Select DMs Only in the Instagram settings inside unScroll, or choose a custom setup.
- Open an existing conversation and check the ordinary messages you need.
- Try the types of shared links you normally receive. A link can open a restricted section, especially a Reel.
- Check any profile or saved-post task you rely on. Adjust the preset if that task needs another section.
- Finish the reply and leave. If you end up browsing anyway, note which transition made that possible.
Avoid two common mismatches
First, a whole-app limit can prevent a necessary reply after the time budget is used. A section filter may be a closer fit if conversations must remain available. Second, staying in the original Instagram app bypasses browser-only filters; you need to use the configured route for those filters to apply.
Original-app protection is separate and requires Android accessibility permission. The known Home curtain issue means you should not assume the original app always opens into a protected state. Check the current product facts before choosing that route.
